Social media footage of a Waymo driverless taxi driving through a red light has split opinion about whether the vehicle made a technically correct manoeuvre.

According to the Sun newspaper, some say the Waymo roboaxi was in the right – with others claiming it took the wrong decision. Commenting on the footage, which was posted on X on 27 July one reply said:

“Driverless cars coming to a Town/City near you and this is with a driver whilst on trial.”

However, others have pointed out that the driverless car followed the correct procedure, as outlined in the Highway Code, Rule H3.

This states drivers turning left must give way to a cyclist travelling straight ahead in a cycle lane, cycle track, or on the main road.

While the car appears to drive through a red light, some road users again said it followed the correct procedures as outlined by the road markings.

One user said: “This was the correct action. You do not turn left when there is a cyclist on your inside.”

Another added: “The robo car followed the actual rules of the road. You do not turn left when there is a cyclist on the inside.”
